Parc Safari re-opens Friday, May 20, so it’s a good opportunity to update I Spy Montreal’s Guided Tour of Parc Safari. Keep in mind that for early-season visits, it may be too chilly for the water park area; on the other hand, a lower admission rate is offered at this time of year.

Park Safari (View map)
Schedule: Open May 20 through October 10, 2011. Hours vary from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., depending on the day. Check the schedule before going.
Cost: Promo rate, May 20 to June 17: $18.87 for adults and children age 3 to 17, $9.97 for age 24 to 35 months. Free for 0 to 24 months. Regular rate: Adults, $33.79; age 3 to 17, $20.41; age 2 to 3, $9.97, age 0 to 2, free.

Although the main attraction at Parc Safari is the drive-through, um, safari, there’s a lot more to this Hemmingford attraction for young families. In fact, for people with children age 0 to 3, I would recommend skipping the drive-through section of the park. Although it’s fun to visit and feed animals giraffes, zebras, deer, etc. from your car windows, it can take over an hour to snake through the grounds.

We went the drive-through route on our first visit with a 3-year-old and a one-year-old. Both kids were bored after about 30 minutes and we were stuck in the car, unable to exit the line, for about an hour and a half. BUT, once we parked and saw all the other activities, we were glad we had sprung for season tickets and ended up going to Parc Safari about 3 more times that summer.

Water park targets young families
Once you park and enter the site, you see that there’s no lack of things to do and other animals to see. There’s a small amusement park area with basic rides (it costs a bit extra). Kids are also wowed by the huge playground area, which has various jungle gyms and climbing structures. Then, you reach the water park area, where there’s a network of wading pools with water sprinklers and slides that are perfect for the up-to-five age group. Aside from this, there’s a lazy river, where you can float freely on inner tubes. There aren’t any large-scale water slides or wave pools here – it’s really targeted at young children.

Lots of animals see by foot and stroller
There are also various animals to see in the walk/stroll-through “wildlife observatory” section. One of the big attractions at Parc Safari is the white lions; you can actually walk through a glass tunnel in the lions’ enclosure. They may be standing on the tunnel as you walk through, so kids can see them at close range. There are also elevated walkways through chimpanzee, macaque, hyena and bear enclosures. In another part of the park is a deer trail, where visitors can walk in and feed free-roaming deer.

Game plan

Plan to arrive at or around opening time to maximize your time at Parc Safari. It’s one of the more expensive family outings, so you may want to forgo naps or prepare to have the kids sleep on the way home in the car.

Pack swimming gear and hand sanitizer, in case the kids do end up feeding the animals.

There are tables for picnicking, but also various restaurants – ranging from cafeteria to sit-down, order-from-a-menu style.

If you skip the drive-through section, the pool area is relatively quiet during the morning hours, but gets very busy in the afternoon.

Also, it’s a great idea to bring your own stroller; although the grounds are not as big as Granby Zoo or La Ronde, it’s helpful to have your own wheels. Wagons are rented for a $5 fee.

Have you been to Parc Safari?

The Ecomuseum in Ste. Anne de Bellevue is a beautiful fall destination for parents with young children. It’s a private, nonprofit wildlife park that houses animals from the St. Lawrence River Valley area, including deer, caribou, bears, raccoons, porcupines, foxes, otters, turtles, plus beautiful owls and birds of prey (eagles are really massive!).

What’s great about the Ecomuseum is the low-key, natural setting. Once you walk through the museum’s main centre, you’re back outside and ready to stroll trails and boardwalks that lead through the animal enclosures. In the fall, you’re surrounded by the changing leaves, and get to observe many animals native to Canada. A caribou with a crazy set of antlers made an impression on our kids during our most recent visit; in other visits, they loved getting an underwater view of otters as they twist, turn and play in the water.

Stroller-friendly walkways
The walkways are wide and stroller friendly, although there are a few stairs along the way. A double stroller may be hard to manage, so a baby carrier/backpack might work better. Children about 2.5 and up should be able to walk the circuit by foot. It takes 30 minutes to an hour to walk (depending on how much you want to see). Although children three and under may not stay interested in the animals for the whole time, they’ll be happy to explore the area, climb rocks, collect new sticks, etc., just as they would at a park. Once you’ve done the animal circuit, you can always go to the playground area in the parking lot, which has a slide, row-boat and tunnel.

Natural, non-commercial, educational fun
There is a gift shop at the Ecomuseum, but the whole place feels very non-commercial and geared toward educational fun. There is an indoor lunch room with lots of tables and chairs where you can eat food that you bring. Aside from a couple of snack- and drink-vending machines, there’s no food for sale on site.

The Ecomuseum is open year-round and hosts a number of activities for kids of all ages. In October, for example, the Ecomuseum hosts mom-and-tot story time on Friday, Oct. 2 and 16 at 10 a.m. There is also Breakfast with the Bears, which includes continental breakfast, a special presentation on black bears, and preparation of the bears’ breakfast. It’s held on Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for age 3 and up.

After one visit to Granby Zoo, we felt like staying overnight in Granby so we could go back again the next day.

This zoo/water park/amusement park is a premium destination that REALLY makes young families welcome. About one hour away from downtown Montreal, it’s a fairly direct drive (but allow extra time to get over the Champlain Bridge). It’s well worth a trip for those with children who are at least two to three years old (read below for age range information).

It’s not a cheap outing – admission totalled almost $100 for two adults, a four-year-old and a two-year-old – so plan to spend the whole day. Walk on the wild side, skip afternoon naps, and hope that kids will either fall asleep in the stroller when they get tired, or just conk out on the ride home.

The beautiful grounds of Granby Zoo sprawl over about 100 acres, so a stroller (either your own or a rental) is a must (see tips below) for small children. You’ll most likely start by visiting the African animals area (elephants, giraffes, lions, rhinoceroses, hippos, giant tortoises, gorillas, lemurs, etc.), which is great because they’re large, impressive and easily visible for most kids. Granby Zoo may soon be receive 3 more elephants from the Toronto zoo.

If it’s time for lunch at this point, the main restaurant is close by. Another absolute must during your visit is a ride on the elevated train – it circles the other section of the zoo that small kids will probably not have the interest or energy to see by foot. On the train, everyone can sit back, relax and get a beautiful aerial view of the grounds and more animals (the mini farm, tigers, birds, monkeys, etc.). Although you have to pay extra to do the train ride, it is well worth it.

Another highlight for small children will be the mini farm, which is not like the petting zoos you see in malls. Children can actually walk into very large enclosures to pet friendly baby goats, sheep, and rabbits (there are handwashing stations right there). There are also rides on unbelievably cute miniature horses ($5 extra).

After the mini-farm, you may want to hit Amazoo, the water park, which is at the back of the property. There is a lazy river (you sit on inner tubes and float), two wave pools, a lagoon area for small children, plus a play pool that’s got slides, fountains, sprinklers, etc. The water is heated, so kids can splash right in. You could spend an entire day here. Having had a full morning of over-the-top activities, plus fast food and ice cream, our kids lasted only about an hour, but were certainly impressed.

We did not get to the on-site amusement park area, which has grownup-size roller coasters and a swinging ship, as well as basic rides for small children.

What else we loved about Granby Zoo:

Despite being busy, no long lineups: Although the parking lot itself was a zoo when we arrived, we waited no more than five minutes to get in, and didn’t wait in any other lineups (paying for lunch, a train ride, seeing animals, going to the bathroom) during our visit.

Bathrooms are EVERYWHERE: They’re also clean, have changing tables, and some have breastfeeding rooms (the one in the main restaurant area has one).

Variety of food: There’s an indoor “market-style” food court, which sells healthy sandwiches and fruit, along with fast food options.

Lots of shade: There are many shaded areas to stop, rest and have a drink.

Children rule: Lots of details make it special for kids. Like the fact that they get a “passport” at admission, which they can stamp with pictures of each animal that they see along the way. For many kids, getting all their passport stamps seemed to eclipse actually seeing the animals. There are also tons of play features along the way (like a small airplane and truck to sit in, a beautiful playground structure).

But parents are happy, too: There’s so much to do and the variety of animals is really world class, so a trip to Granby is a treat for parents. Plus, they sell Belgian-chocolate-dipped ice cream. Hello!

Tips:

Age range: If you have one child who’s under age three, consider the pricing before making the trip. It costs $33 per adult, so it would cost about $70 for two parents to take a two-year-old (it’s free for kids under age 3), who may be interested in animals for about half an hour (or less!). There are certainly other things to do, like the petting zoo, the train ride and the water park, but given that a toddler probably can’t manage a whole-day trip (including a long drive to and from) to explore the park, it may be worth waiting till they’re around three.

Bring your own stroller: Although the zoo rents strollers, wagons and double chariot-style strollers, it’s a great idea to bring your own. The kids may be more likely to relax and sleep in their own stroller when they get tired. Also, it will help transport the gear you’ll need (sunscreen, hats, bathing suits, towels, bottles of water, snacks, etc.)

There is an IGA across the street: If you forget any basic supplies, there’s a grocery store to stop at just before entering the zoo.

If you are interested in spending the night in the area, there’s hotel information on the Granby Zoo website.
