If someone handed me the keys to a navy blue Mini Cooper, I’d be pretty excited. Otherwise, cars don’t really do it for me. So, I’ve never had any urge to visit the annual Montreal International Auto Show, which runs Jan. 15 to 24 this year.

A Classic Duesenberg from 1929

But, after looking into it, I now realize that it could be fun for families with young car enthusiasts – the kind that have about 50 Hot Wheels parked in their room and umpteen race tracks.

The auto show, held at the Palais des Congrès in Old Montreal, has some attractions that kids would definitely get a kick out of. If you don’t mind crowds, it may be a worthwhile indoor weekend refuge.

Check out this microcar!

Cars: past, present and future

There will be classic vintage cars, microcars (the smallest mass-produced cars), as well as lots of everyday cars that visitors are welcome to sit in: A great opportunity for kids to get behind the wheel. High rollers will enjoy “Seventh Heaven”, which includes Ferraris, Bentleys and Lamborghinis. Sadly, parents, neither you nor your children will be getting behind the wheel in this section! Instead, head over to the race-car simulators. Cars of the future, designed by university students, will also be on display.

Free childcare service

For kids who aren’t into cars, there is a free childcare service for ages 3 to 10, where they can play, do arts and crafts, dress up and have their faces painted. Great idea! The Palais des Congrès also has several on-site restaurant options.
