    The Biodome is well known for its various habitats, ranging from a humid, tropical area to the much cooler Laurentian forest area. How does it maintain these environments and who keeps the resident plants and animals happy?

    This weekend only, the Biodome offers a “behind the scenes” tour that explains how it all works. Participants get to meet those who feed and care for the animals and maintain their environment.

    The tours are targeted at age six to 12, and last about 90 minutes.

    Johanne Gravel, a naturalist at the Biodome, says one of the most popular stops on the tour is the kitchen, where visitors can see how the animals’ food is prepared. I wonder what the sloths’ favourite is? Or the poison dart frogs? “We also talk about how we keep the animals active,” Gravel says. “Sometimes we hide the food in different places.”

    Participants also get to see the veterinary clinic, set up with stuffed animals to show how the equipment is used. At each station of the tour, kids can get a stamp in their “passport”, which also has questions about what they’ve seen – a great way to keep them engaged.

    The Behind the Scenes Rally is one good reason to visit the Biodome this weekend, another is that it’s the last chance to meet some visitors from Madagascar: ring-tailed lemurs, geckos, frogs, fish and a boa constrictor.
